RallyCoach on the Court

Spencer,

I facilitated a two day Cooperative Learning workshop in Amarillo High School in Texas, in August.

As a former basketball coach, I usually try to touch base with the coaches, especially the basketball coaches.

I hit it off well with the basketball coaches there. They told me something very interesting at the end of the workshop.

They attended a basketball clinic at Wichita State this past season.

It was a "watch the practice" type clinic. They said that when Wichita State was working on team offense or team defense during practice, each player on the sideline who was not participating at that time, was paired with someone on the floor. Their assignment was to watch their teammate on the floor, encourage them when they were doing what they were supposed to be doing, and correct them when they weren't. When they went on the floor, the roles were reversed. It kept everyone involved and on the same page. They commented that this coaching strategy was very similar to RallyCoach.

I shared this strategy with the coach at Guilford College (my Alma Mater). He says he does something similar when they are watching game films. I also recommended this strategy to the the high school coach who succeeded me at Indian Hills High School. Both coaches said they'd use it.

Thought you might be interested in learning how structured coopearation is finding its way onto the court.
